A new, life-saving drug for helping coronavirus victims has been unveiled this afternoon

Ceredigion has seen no new cases in the last 24 hours, according to Public Health Wales.

The county has also seen the ratio of positive coronavirus tests fall back to 3.0% again.

A total of 1,612 of tests have taken place across Ceredigion, with the number of positive results remaining at 49.

Ceredigion was one of nine counties in Wales that recorded no new coronavirus cases in the last 24 hours.

Others include Powys and Pembrokeshire.

New life-saving drug

The numbers come as researchers have announced that a drug has been found to reduce the risk of deaths among ventilated Covid-19 patients, as well as those on oxygen.

A team of scientists working at Oxford University found that the low-dose steroid dexamethasone was also successful in treating patients receiving oxygen, reducing deaths by up to 20 per cent.

The findings of the Recovery Trial at the university have been hailed as a major breakthrough in the battle against Covid-19.

Dexamethasone is a cheap and widely available drug, which could prove incredibly beneficial to poorer countries with high rates of coronavirus.

It usually comes in a tablet form, but dissolvable, liquid and syrup versions are available too.
